Today’s topic: Consciously changing our thoughts — and finding happier ones.

Well, hey there. It’s Kristen again, and welcome to Day 9 of Love Thyself: 30 Ways, 30 Days.

You know, today I have a question for you. Is there something that you do in your mind to kind of switch from, say, a negative thought to a positive thought, or from a worry thought to a happy thought? You know, this came up for me the other day. I was texting with a beautiful woman in my life, and she was having some difficulty. And I gently suggested — or maybe not so gently suggested — to her that, you know, that she might want to think about really switching her thoughts, because the worry that she was feeling was really not going to help her or anybody around her. You know, in fact, it probably would be really detrimental.

So, what I suggested to her was what I had been doing. And I started doing this last week and it has made a huge difference in my own thoughts and my own way of being every day. And that is, every time I noticed myself starting to have a negative thought or my, you know, my brain kind of going in a certain direction, I would consciously stop it and I would start to sing the “Happy” song. You know, Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” song. Totally fabulous song! Or I would play it over and over and over again. And you know what? It does make you happy! It started to make me happy.

So, when I’ve talked about choice in previous videos, and getting to the place where we really have a choice and just kind of consciously stop our thoughts — that’s the kind of thing I’m talking about. You know, it takes awhile. It’s taken me a really long time to get to the place of feeling like I have a little bit more control over my thoughts and, therefore, my emotions, you know, because thoughts lead to emotions and all that kind of thing.

So, my suggestion for you today is, what is your thing, like the “Happy” song is for me? What is your thing? Is it thinking about painting, or is it thinking about the ocean, or being at the ocean, or being out in nature? You know, or what is the thing, like in the moment, like maybe you’re at work or maybe you’re in line at the grocery store and, you know, you start to feel and think negatively. You know, what helps to switch it for you? You know, is it the thought of your dog, your cat, you know, or cuddling, or something, cuddling one of those fuzzy little things?

So, again, just, what is it for you? Think about what it is and and do it. Please try it. You know that thinking about doing something and actually doing it are two different things. So, you know, it’s often easy to say, “Oh yeah, I know that” or, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, you know, I know that,” but do we do it? You know, and there’s nothing to lose in this. You know, this is only an everything to gain, nothing to lose kind of thing.
